Panguitch Lake
06/04/11 at 22:05:42

Does anyone have info on the trails around Panguitch Lake? We're looking for some two track trails in the area before we head over to Casto Canyon the following day. We're staying at Bear Paws Resort at the lake. Also can you ride your ATVs into the city of Panguitch? We are not ATV Street Legal but we do have our Utah stickers.

They are pretty ATV friendly in Panguitch.  Trails go down into the town and go to Casto Canyon on the other side.

Mid,
Like Taccom said they are very atv friendly in Panguitch...I have riden from Panguitch City to and around the lake a bunch of times but I didn't have my new GPS at the time so I do not have the tracks yet. This year I plan to make tracks too and from Panguitch City from the lake. The only trails I have at this time is from the KOA in Panguitch City to the Paunsaugunt and around thru Bryce back thru Casto Canyon which was almost 100 miles round trip if your interested in those tracks shoot me a PM and I would be more then happy to send them to you Happy Trails.

There's a whale of a good 'rock garden' up there!!

Got lots of aluminum scrapings about 6 years ago.  Sport quads just didn't have an operator (and yappy dog on board) good enough to navigate over the rocks without leaving lots of scrapes along the way!!

Just sayin!!

Our group will be riding in the area as well on July 4th as well.  We are looking forward to the escape.  We have a larger group...probably 20+ ATVs so we will be easy to spot.  Say hi when we pass.  SARrider.

SAR,
Do you guys camp right off the Great Western Trail after it crosses over the 12(north) on the way to Panguitch from Tropic Res. I always see people camping back there when I ride thru there on my way back to Panguitch from Bryce or the Paunsaugunt...if so let me know maybe we'll stop in over the 4th if you guys are at camp

Midnight,

Since no one actually answered your original question I thought I'd chime in.

There is a nice ATV trail that goes over the divide to the west of Panguitch Lake and drops into Yankee Meadows (Markagunt #1).  Due to snow levels there it may not actually be open on the 4th though.

North of Panguitch Lake there is a nice trail you can loop off the #1 and back, it is the #2 trail.

ATV,
That trail you are refering too that drops into Yankee Meadows is it a very difficult trail I have been to the top but never been down it due to time issues. Also the trail you spoke of that goes north from the lake is the trail I have been on just never had a GPS to make tracks but will this year.

I would call it moderately difficult.  It's not too bad.
It might have a bunch of trees across it when it opens up from snow but other than that I don't think you would have any problems with it unless they've had some rock/land slides from all the snow/water in the soil.

It's really a neat ride.  You can go from there back to the south past Yankee Reservoir and up to Sidney Valley and all the way over to Duck Creek for an all day ride.  Grab lunch at Duck Creek, fuel at Loose Wheels then make a loop back around the #4 trail.  It's really a nice scenic ride.

I'm wondering if he might be looking for another use for that "dust mask" from a couple years ago.  He's probably had it pretty well hidden in hopes that it would be long forgotten by now.

Nope!!!  We remember the dust mask.  Leopard print, wasn't it?

Gary,
I think I have the Markagunt map but I will have to check my riding back pack I have up north when I go this weekend. I think Valleysol sent me one last year when he sent me the trail cd but I will double check this weekend. If for some reason I do not have one tho I will order when I get back thanks.

ATV,
I found one of my three Panguitch Loop Maps and checked out that loop you were refering too from the lake to Duck Creek over Sidney Peaks that loooks like a good long ride and ideas on the mileage that looks like a good trip.   Cool

Hey guys just got back from Panguitch for a quick weekend at the trailer. Did a little bit of riding while I was there.. the wife and I made a trip from Panguitch KOA to Duck Creek had lunch then rode back... beautiful scenery trails were all clear ... Mammoth Creek is the largest I have seen it in years but over all great little 75 mile ride... have fun I will post more next weekend while up there riding again....  :0)

Here are some photos from our 4th of July trip to Panguitch Lake and Casto Canyon. We want to thank Charlie (ChanManYFZ450) for showing us around on Saturday. Had a good time even though the weather was in the 90's. At least it was cooler than Vegas.
